Call. Call Now
UPDATE: Hey, boys and girls. Guess what Uncle Bobby just found out. It seems that there's yet another documented case of pharmacists denying emergency contraceptives to a woman who had been raped, this time in Arizona. Not only that, but the charming manager on duty decided that while he was willing to help out a woman who had just suffered one of the most emotionally painful traumas possible, he was only willing to do it if it wouldn't cut into his free time:
"He (the manager) said he would fill it himself if we could get there before his shift ended, within 10 minutes," said Sabrina Fladness, a University of Arizona student and owner of a computer service business.Jeez. Be reasonable: The Simpsons comes on at ten in Tucson, and he probably knew he could make by the end of the first commercial break if he left right at ten. You can't expect a guy to miss The Simpsons just because some
"But we were more than 10 minutes away, so that was impossible. So he said we would have to come back the next morning" - after the shift of the refusing pharmacist ended. "He made no provision for getting it that night," she said.
Get a grip on your priorities, ladies.
On the other hand, if you're in the mood to ask the store manager what the flying fuck he was thinking, it would appear that 520-323-6658 would do the trick. Look at it this way: the sexist, theocratic pig of a pharmacist probably has ethical reasons for what he did (totally bankrupt and abusive ethics, but ethics nonetheless). If you asked the pharmacist what he was thinking, he could at least spout off some Theocrat garbage about life begins at fertilization or snowflake angels or some shit.
But the manager? What the fuck can he say for his sorry-assed self? "Well, yeah, I know that she was raped and all, but what did you want me to do? Stay a few minutes late?"
The more I think about that selfish prick, the angrier I get. I'd really like to call him up, but I think I'd probably lose control and end up with a warrant in the State of Arizona for "assault by threat" or something (I think I'll have to settle for a corporate email). So, if you can keep your head while dealing with a self-centered pig, why don't you see if you can get ahold of the guy and ask what the fuck he was thinking? Be sure to drop me a comment if you do.
Can you imagine that manager treating someone who had suffered any other serious trauma like that? "You've suffered a criminal assault, you need emergency medical care, there aren't any other pharmacies that can help you, my pharmacist won't fill the prescription, time is swiftly running out, and all you're asking me to do is stay a few minutes after my shift ends. Tough."
Can you imagine any other situation where a medical provider could refuse to supply emergency medical care and not only get away with it, but have his employer support his decision? I keep trying to come up with analogies, but nothing even comes close.
With the possible exception of those stories (some apocryphal, some no doubt true) of African-Americans bleeding to death while white doctors watched and did nothing. The message is the same in both cases: "You don't have full rights. You don't deserve the basic care and decency that any other human being would receive. We would go to heroic lengths to help you if you were like us, but you're not. You are sub-human."
Anyone want to pick up the phone?

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.....................
This reminds me of a friend of mine who is Roman Catholic and is not a fan of abortions. However, he pointed out that if his teenage daughter were raped.. (statistics I have read claim that 25% of girls in the U.S., that's girls not women, are or will be victims of sexual abuse. 15% of boys)...,which she stands a fair to middlin' chance of in this society, then he damn sure would give her EC. (EC being akin to, if not in fact, the morning after pill) Why, would he do this? Hell, she's going to be permanently scarred by the rape, forcing her to carry and give birth to child resulting from that assault would be inhumane. It's like saying the people in the movie Alien had to quietly deal with the fact that a monster was gestating inside of them. "It's life" Once again this is evidence of the "Pro-lifer's" penchant for considering human life or potential life in the womb as somehow more sacred and deserving of protection, however once you're out of the womb, "Yer on yer own and if the sate says you need killin' then I'm all fer it." Ugh, just another example of Old Testament literalism and people's inability to critically and thoughtfully analyze their own holy scriptures. Idiots.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I think the shock is still sinking in. Will blog on this later.
Good Grief.
What are the names of these people? If they're going to be free to deny women emergency birth control we should know who they are.
Right now I'm too shocked for the anger to sink in yet. But it's there.
